Former Tasmanian Labor minister David O’Byrne takes United Voice union national job

FORMER Tasmanian Labor minister David O’Byrne has taken the national reins of the powerful United Voice union.

Mr O’Byrne, long regarded as a future leader of the Labor Party in Tasmania, will start in the role of acting national secretary before taking the top job permanently in September.

The union that represents about 120,000 cleaners, hospitality workers and other low- paid workers is regarded as one of the most powerful unions in the country and responsible for driving much of Labor’s socially progressive agenda in recent years.
