Stop gambling with our lungs
The NSW government is gambling with the health of casino workers, United Voice NSW secretary, Mark Boyd says.
Mr Boyd is urging the O’Farrell Government to back an amendment to that would lift the exemption from Smoke Free Environment legislation enjoyed by high roller rooms at The Star.
The American-owned company is lobbying MPs to retain an exemption it says is crucial to luring Asia’s biggest gamblers to Sydney.
Mr Boyd says casino workers are the only employees across the state that can legally be subjected to second hand smoke in enclosed spaces.
“The health standards are clear, there is no safe level for tobacco smoke. That’s why it is barred in every other workplace in NSW and these laws are being extended to open areas,” Mr Boyd says.
“For too long NSW governments have placed the casino’s financial interests over the health its workers.
“The casino says working in these rooms is optional but it is clear that failure to work in these rooms can damage career prospects.”
